Did you know that just a little bit of exercise done routinely can lower blood pressure naturally with often large results for some people in just a short amount of time? Let me give you an example of how I found this out. Just a couple of weeks ago during a routine physical examination from my physician, I was told that my blood pressure numbers were higher than normal and that because of my age (54) I was at a higher health risk for a heart attack or stroke if I didn’t get it back down under control. So he suggested that I try to make a couple of lifestyle changes by being a little more active, giving me a diet to follow and also telling me to quit smoking and come back in two weeks and if my numbers stayed the same or lowered then I could continue doing what I was for now but if they were higher then most likely medication to lower blood pressure would have to be prescribed. So I decided to be sensible and to do as he asked as much as possible. As for the diet he gave me I was already doing it so that wasn’t going to be of any help. As for quitting smoking I had already decided that I wanted to stop so I figured now would be a good time to begin by at least cutting down before going cold turkey. As for the exercise I had already thought that I was leading a fairly active lifestyle for a man in my health and age. I have some other health problems that limit me to what I am capable of doing but I also figured there is also room to improve upon the amount of physical activity that I can and am able to do. So this is the routine that I used to lower blood pressure with exercise. First I started with a walking in place exercise that would last from 10 – 15 minutes at a time at least 3 times a day then gradually increased it (the walking in place) to whenever I was just standing around for any length of time. At first I was barely getting my feet up off the ground or floor and was alternating my steps to rapidly which according to my wife reminded her of a little boy who needed to pee really bad. Eventually I found my pace and rhythm and began to feel my cardiovascular increase with the workouts. I found that I could do this while watching TV or any convenient time where I could be standing around for a few minutes. Another thing that I did to increase my physical activity was to walk out to meet the mailman as he was coming down the street to deliver the mail. I live about midway in the block and knew about when the mail was delivered every day so I would time it so that I could meet him on his to my house at the beginning of the block and greet him, then walk with him back to my house as he made his deliveries on the way. It broke up the monotony of his day and made a new friend for the both of us. So for two weeks this was my blood pressure exercise program as a natural blood pressure control method. I went in for my follow-up blood pressure check and guess what? My numbers had actually dropped four points in just two weeks by doing the simple things that I described above. I am proud of myself and my doctor is happy with me and says to keep it up or better yet to kick it up a notch and also to stop smoking. So once again I think I’ll take his advice and kick it up a notch by walking farther with my new mailman friend past my house to the other end of the block then back home again and also opening that box of nicotine patches I purchased the other day and using them before my next follow-up appointment in a couple of weeks. If I can do this then I am sure any one can. Your results may not be as great as mine or they may even be better by trying this or something similar but it is most definitely worth the time to at least try to better your health.
